Understanding Indian Turmeric Origins
Erode, Nizamabad, Salem and Rajapuri: what the origin name tells a turmeric buyer, and what it does not.
India produces most of the world's turmeric. In the trade, turmeric is usually described by the market or region it comes from.
Common origin names
- Erode, Tamil Nadu: a major trading centre, known for bright colour and uniform fingers.
- Nizamabad, Telangana: widely traded fingers and bulbs with a rich colour.
- Salem, Tamil Nadu: compact fingers with a strong aroma.
- Rajapuri, Maharashtra: larger rhizomes, often selected for grinding.
What an origin name does not guarantee
Curcumin content, colour and moisture vary with season, farm practice, curing and storage, even within one region. An origin name is a useful starting point, not a specification.
Fingers, bulbs or powder
Fingers are the side shoots of the rhizome and are the most common export form. Bulbs are the central part. Powder may be ground from either, and is often specified by mesh size.
